Energy Conservation in Cooling Tower

Energy Conservation in Cooling Towers

Cooling tower is an essential equipment in almost all the process industries, fertilizer complexes, petrochemical industries and air conditioning systems. Most of the cooling towers are designed and manufactured to have a reliable performance. Due to the off site location or other reasons, cooling towers are not usually viewed as potential equipment for energy conservation measures. It may be noted that inefficiently operating towers can lead to serious inefficiencies in plant process and equipment, resulting in higher energy consumption or product losses.

The important parameters which are useful for determining the performance of cooling towers are Temperature Range and Temperature Approach. Temperature Range is the difference between the cooling tower water inlet and outlet temperatures. Temperature Approach is the difference between the cooling tower cold water temperature and ambient wet bulb temperature. Though both parameters should be monitored, the 'Approach' is a better indicator of cooling tower performance.

 Performance Evaluation :

To evaluate the cooling tower performance, the required parameters are given in the software like designed water circulation, designed hot water temperature, designed cold water temperature, designed permissible solids in water, designed wet bulb temperature, operating water circulation, operating hot water temperature, operating cold water temperature, operating permissible solids in water, and operating wet bulb temperature.

From the above data, calculate cooling tower range and approach. To measure the cooling tower capability, from a given graph, at present actual cooling tower range and wet bulb temperature, the cold water temperature at different water loading (90%, 100%, 100%) can be measured. The package will draw a graph based on these values between cold water temperature and water loading. The percentage water load for the present cold water temperature can be calculated from the graph get 'Predicted water flow'.
