Substitution of Furnace Oil in Non-Ferrous Melting Furnaces By Using Producer Gas

Coal gasification is a process by which COAL is converted into a fuel gas rich in hydrogen
and carbon monoxide. The oil crisis of the 1970s triggered a renewed interest in various
alternative coal utilization technologies, such as coal gasification to form producer gas
as a means of replacing or supplementing petroleum resources such as oil and natural gas.
The purpose of this work was to evolve and develop a gasification setup that would suffice
to provide a flame temperature high enough to melt non-ferrous metals. The setup on test
firing produced a temperature of 1453 K, and was sufficiently high enough to melt Brass,
Zinc and allied non-ferrous applications. The results achieved provide greater insight
into a technique to bring about fuel cost reduction and energy conservation.
This project focuses on replacement of Fuel oil by Producer Gas in Non-Ferrous melting furnaces.
Features:
- Industry is bleeding on the energy front and
the need of the hour is to find viable solution.
- Oil substitution requires:
- Installation of a suitable gasifier adjacent to furnace
- Gas & air piping
- Little modification in the existing burners
- No major change in the original installation required
- No effect on process
- 60-100% of oil can be substituted by gas
- High efficiencies are achievable
- 3.5-4 kg woody biomass/ coal or 5-5.5 kg rice husk substitutes 1 liter of FO
- Cost of gas generation equivalent to 1 liter liquid fuel in the range of Rs. 3.00-6.00
- Pay back period often less than 1 year
Industrial Applications:
Various industries had already used producer gas as a substitute of FO in furnaces(not in
Non ferrous melting furnaces) for carrying out various operations. Some of the applications are
as follows:
| S. No. |
Application |
Fuel used in gasifier |
| 1 |
Steel reheating for hot rolling |
D- grade coal (about 30% ash) |
| 2 |
Annealing & Galvanizing of steel wires |

Future of biomass energy depends on providing reliable energy services at competitive cost.
In India, this will happen only if biomass energy services can compete on a fair market.
Policy priorities should be to orient biomass energy services towards market and to reform
the market towards fair competition by internalizing the externalities of competing energy
resources.
The advent of such technologies will no doubt lead to lesser oil consumption and prevent
the fast depletion of Oil wells.
