Boiler Fuel Conversion at Perstorp Chemicals India Private Limited (PCIPL), Vapi, India

Reduction in GHG emissions = 19257 TCO2-e per year

PCIPL manufactures Formaldehyde & Pentaerythritol. In the production process, steam is required as source for heating at various stages. The plant has three Residual Fuel Oil fired Boilers (8 TPH x 1 and 12 TPH x 2) contributing to GHG emissions. This CDM project activity primarily aims at reducing these GHG emissions by fuel conversion in the boilers for steam generation (i.e. firing briquettes in place of Residual Fuel Oil). These boilers fully comply the existing pollution norms and also operating efficiently, however PCIPL has opted to have environmentally sustainable solution for steam generation and therefore PCIPL has taken-up this project activity.

Purpose of the project activity:

In first phase, the project consists of investment to convert existing residual fuel oil fired boilers by retrofitting extended furnace to facilitate manual briquette firing in 8 TPH boiler where as in second phase the project activity involves installing a new 14 TPH boiler. The boilers consume 7062.61 KL of residual fuel oil/year producing 97.735 kilotonnes of steam/year and generating 21661.79 tonnes per year of CO2 equivalent GHG emissions by emitting CO2, CH4 & N2O. This project has capacity to reduce GHG emissions by 19,257.54 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year and 1,92,575.4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over a 10-year time frame. Apart from GHG emissions reductions, the project significantly reduces SOx emission and NOx emissions (Ref: Boiler emission test record).

Contribution of the project activity to sustainable development:

The project has evident contribution to sustainable development, which are as follows:

  1. Reducing petroleum oil requirement by use of sustainable source of energy
  2. Reducing petroleum oil import requirement for the country
  3. Better use of agricultural residues, the project offers monetary benefits to the farmers by selling these residues, thus making villages more self sustainable
  4. Social and economic benefits by generating employment for the deprived segment of the society at the rural level (which is major concern in India) for collection, processing and supply of the biomass
  5. Installation of more briquette manufacturing plants near to villages thus bringing industrialization near villages contributing to decentralized growth
  6. Employment generation in urban area as due to manual firing of briquettes more charge-men are required as compared to operators required for RFO fired boilers
  7. Reducing the amount of GHG emissions and other pollutants

Thus the project is in accordance with interim approval criteria suggested for sustainable development by the DNA in India i.e. Ministry of Environment & Forest, Government of India for CDM projects.
